Rethymno Carnival 2024 Float Design Production and Decoration

Rethymno Carnival Float Decoration

Teams work hard on their floats!

Floats are handmade and depict artistic and satirical scenes, adding to the festival's celebration.

The  Rethymno Carnival 's  theme this year is "Getting Together." It's all about bringing people together to beat loneliness and have fun! Preparations are already underway, with 27 teams getting ready for the big events.

Floats are a big part of the Rethymno Carnival, with a history dating back to 1914. They're handmade and depict artistic and satirical scenes, adding to the festival's celebration. To stay eco-friendly, the floats are made from recyclable materials, including paper, plastic, and wood.

Teams put a lot of effort into their floats, thinking up ideas and working for many hours.

But it's not all work – they also have fun with parties where there's food, music, and dancing.

The team spirit helps to keep everyone excited and motivated.

Preparations start right after Christmas, with teams gathering in storehouses around the city to bring their imaginative themes to life. It's not an easy task, requiring lots of discussion, effort, and time. But amidst the hard work, there are also parties with food, wine, and music, creating a fun atmosphere that strengthens team spirit.

Visitors are welcome to learn about the float-making process and the history of the carnival.

The Grand Parade, featuring over 15,000 participants and dozens of floats, is the highlight of the carnival and is scheduled for Sunday, March 17th.  Come join the fun on Portaliou Street!

City of Rethymno

You are invited to travel to areas, which are perhaps still unknown to the majority, and which are sometimes remote, but always magical and magnificent throughout the seasons. We recommend our visitors to see our picturesque villages through the eyes of the soul, try the Cretan cuisine, our wine and “tsikoudia”, participate in our revelries and festivities, but most importantly get to know our soul, our hospitality, the safe, untouched interior of the region, the other Rethymno.
