Rethymnon's cinematic appeal

Rethymnon's cinematic appeal

Rethymno, a dreamy filming destination in Crete

Rethymno has a unique and special quality that makes it a perfect setting for movies and TV shows.

Rethymnon's cinematic appeal is undeniable. The extensive coastline with its pristine sandy beaches and charming old harbor provides a stunning backdrop for any production. The old town with its fortress, labyrinth of cobbled streets, and Venetian and Ottoman architecture transports the viewer to a bygone era, while the lush surroundings with their olive groves and vineyards offer a glimpse into the rustic charm of Crete.

Beyond the old city, Rethymno's allure extends to its picturesque villages, each with its unique charm and cinematic potential.

Rethymno is not just for cinema because of its stunning scenery and rich history. The town's welcoming community has played a crucial role in attracting filmmakers, offering them unwavering support and a sense of belonging.

The Greek series "Sasmos" unfolds a captivating tale of forbidden love in Rethymno's highland villages. It showcases the enchanting old town of Rethymno and features the rekindling of a family feud between two families.

The creators and actors of "Sasmos" were recently awarded by the Rethymno Tourism  Committee at an event attended by Mayor Giorgos Marinakis and vice mayor Pepi Birliraki for promoting Rethymno.

Apart from Greek productions, Rethymno has also attracted international attention. A German crime thriller centered around a plot involving the director of the planning department was recently shot in Rethymno. This film highlighted various parts of the region, especially the village of Roustika.

The people of Roustika warmly welcomed the film crew, offering assistance with production needs and sharing their warm smiles. The village became active during filming.  In the city, the Deputy Regional Office of Crete's historic building became a focal point for the German production team due to its charming architecture and history.

The filmmakers were deeply moved by the picturesque village, the genuine hospitality of the locals, and their strong community spirit. The collaboration between the film industry and local communities in Rethymno goes beyond showcasing the region's beauty; it emphasizes the warmth and friendliness of the people.

City of Rethymno

You are invited to travel to areas, which are perhaps still unknown to the majority, and which are sometimes remote, but always magical and magnificent throughout the seasons. We recommend our visitors to see our picturesque villages through the eyes of the soul, try the Cretan cuisine, our wine and “tsikoudia”, participate in our revelries and festivities, but most importantly get to know our soul, our hospitality, the safe, untouched interior of the region, the other Rethymno.
